To Modern History is an educational tool meant for 9th graders based on the standards and expectations of Puerto Rican Social Studies teachers. In this grade, students must analyze the following terms: 

Absolutism, The Enlightenment, Artistic Movements, Atlantic Revolution, French Revolution, Napoleonic Era, Industrial Revolution, World War I, The Great Depression, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Fall of the Soviet Union, International Terrorism. 

As well as be familiarized with the following figures:

Martin Luther, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, Napoleon Bonaparte, John Locke, Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Charles de Gaulle, Mijail Gorbachov, Lech Walesa.

World War I

World War I, also known as the Great War, began in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. His murder catapulted into a war across Europe that lasted until 1918. During the conflict, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Canada, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). Thanks to new military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare, World War I saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. By the time the war was over and the Allied Powers claimed victory, more than 16 million people—soldiers and civilians alike—were dead.

Karl Marx

Karl Marx, in full Karl Heinrich Marx is a revolutionary, sociologist, historian, and economist. He published (with Friedrich Engels) Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei (1848), commonly known as The Communist Manifesto, the most celebrated pamphlet in the history of the socialist movement. He also was the author of the movement’s most important book, Das Kapital. These writings and others by Marx and Engels form the basis of the body of thought and belief known as Marxism.
